The purpose of this course is to give you an introduction to GIS and applications relevant to civil engineers. While the principles taught will be general in nature, we will be learning how to use the ArcGIS software program, and working through several exercises that emphasize its general use and application in Civil Engineering.

After completing this course you should feel comfortable with the types of questions a GIS can answer, and with how a GIS database is constructed. You should be able to learn when ArcGIS can be used for a problem and how to customize it to fit your own needs.

Outcomes

Integrate topics from various civil engineering disciplines to solve realistic problems

Obtain and evaluate appropriate input information from databases, handbooks, correlation, experiments and literature

Know where to locate, and how to prepare geographic datasets for use in a GIS

Use GIS tools for spatial analysis, understanding and design of engineering systems

Produce professional maps and technical reports from geographic data for use in written and oral presentations

Customize, or use customized scripts to solve engineering-specific problems with GIS

Compose professional documents in a clear, concise, and effective manner
